Oakland In The News 1886 & Beyond Chapter 14

1. This building was built by B. F. Williams in the 1890's, it was too have two stores and a bank, but it never came about. There was at lest one store and there were lodges meetings held up stairs. Although I have no proof I believe it to be the Armory and housed the Oakland National Guards. At the time of this writing it was known as the Bennetts apartments.




2. This is looking east at the corner of Thomas and Wabash the building on the corner in the back ground is the Oakland Bank.




3. This little restaurant sits on the corner of Chester and Sardou. This building was used as a restaurant for many years and went by many names. It had also been used as an apartment a coulpe times.




4. This building sits on the north of Sardou, in between the corners of Poplar and Green. The door on the far left is Lynn's Bar, the other side was used to house other business's




5. This building was the humble beginnings of Martin's Hobby Shop. It sits on the south side of Sardou between the corners of Wabash and Chester, this building was taken down in the 1980's.



6. This building sits on south side of Thomas between the corners of Arter and Winfield, it was a meat market, grocery's store and a apartment house as well as many other business, this buliding was taken down in the 1960's?




7. This building sits on the north west corner of Thomas and Wabash, ti was used as a restaurant for many years is now a TV. repair shop.




8. This building sits on the south east corner of Thomas and Forest, it was used as a restaurant and drug store.




9. This building sits on the north east corner of Wabash and Fairchild, this was G. H. Ensign's Drug store is now being used a apartment house.




10. This building sits on the south side of Thomas between the corners of Wabash and Chester, this was used as Oakland's Hardware store, it is on longer in use?

Oh wow! The building in #6 was once owned by my great-great grandfather, Fred Haney! In the June 1, 1916 edition of the Topeka Home Journal, it was announced that L.J. Hall sold the building to "Fred Haney of Shorey".

I am so excited to see a picture of an ancestor's home! (when Fred registered in 1918 for the WW1 draft, he cited his home as being at 306 Winfield, and him owning a grocery/meat market at the same address)
